Rebekah recently negotiated a repayment plan for an old student loan, with terms that included a reduction in the overall amount owed, payment of the balance in installments, and a process to re-negotiate the amount if her financial situation changed in the future. She reported that an opportunity to negotiate the repayment of this loan had come up several years earlier, but she wasn’t comfortable engaging in negotiation at that time because “I didn’t know how to go about it.” She ended up walking away without any agreement to pay her outstanding loan, and the fees kept mounting. More recently, she had a renewed opportunity to renegotiate the loan. This time, she explains, she felt empowered to act. She knew she had skills that she had learned in the Negotiation Works classes, and so she engaged with the creditor, asking questions and discussing the issues in a way that resulted in a good outcome. “I now feel like I can negotiate for everything,” Rebekah beamed.
