Michael Woody was born and raised in Southeast Washington DC. He lived and attended school in both DC and Maryland.
Michael comes to Negotiation Works from his role as program analyst at the DC Jail’s Young Men Emerging Unit, which offers an alternative to traditional approaches to incarceration for 18- to 25-year-olds. Michael co-created this innovative, impactful unit during his own incarceration, developing a comprehensive curriculum and mentorship program and introducing an unprecedented array of supportive services in order to create a therapeutic and rehabilitative environment for the young men in the unit.
Upon his release, Michael deepened the program’s impact through his continued work as the Unit’s program analyst. Michael also served as a consultant with the Justice Policy Institute. Additionally, he has provided consultation and guidance to organizations, foundations, and agencies looking to restore humane practices for people who are incarcerated, while creating an environment that is conducive to transformation and rehabilitation. In all of his work, Michael contributes deep insight and leadership from his 25 years of incarceration.
Michael initially joined Negotiation Works as a member of its Board of Directors. “The work of teaching people how to articulate their needs in order to accomplish a goal where both parties involved walk away with a win-win is paramount,” he said. “Conflict most often arises from misunderstandings and disagreements stemming from poor communication, and conflict resolution training is particularly needed in street culture, jails, and prisons.”
When Michael observed Negotiation Works classes and learned more about the impact of the organization’s work, he decided to expand his role.“I understand the importance of being able to communicate effectively, and I understand who stands to benefit the most from developing these skills,” he shared.
With his direct involvement in the program, Michael believes, participants will appreciate even more the importance of acquiring these critical communication and negotiation skills and will then become better equipped to leverage their strengths and accomplish their goals.
